We have all heard the term “black don’t crack” and whilst it is true that black skin is less susceptible to wrinkling, it still comes with it’s own set of issues.

For many black men, the idea of using products for their face and hair is still relatively new. For some even uncomfortable. However, it’s important to note that if you desire to keep your skin in optimum condition for a very very long time, you will have to start incorporating some kind of skincare routine. This all starts with understanding your skin and its needs.

Some of the key complaints with black men’s skin is that it is very oily, the increased risk of hyper-pigmentation, ingrown hair and acne. While there are many ways to address each issue individually, we have compiled a handy list of general tips to help you improve your skin’s overall health.

1. Exfoliate

Skin sheds hundreds of dead cells on a daily basis, this can clog up pores and lead to bumps/pimples. By exfoliating regularly you clear your skin of any debris, including product build up and allow the new layer of fresh skin to be exposed. If you shave often then you definitely need to exfoliate as this will help to reduce the risk of ingrown hair/razor bumps.

2. Get Facials

Facials are not just for the ladies and there is a growing trend of men getting regular facials now too. Aside from the relaxing effects of getting your face pampered, which in it’s own provides a host of health benefits, a facial will also lead to smoother skin. The smoother your skin, the less likely you will irritate it when you shave.

3. Moisturise

Many men have a tendency to use their regular body lotion on their face, which you shouldn’t. Regular lotions can be a little harsher on the sensitive skin on your face. Instead, use moisturisers that have been formulated especially for the face. The best time to apply a moisturiser or oil is right after you have washed your face, damp skin absorbs moisturisers and oils much better.

4.  Eat Right

Your diet needs to consists of skin friendly foods that provide your body with the right nourishments needed to keep your skin healthy. Salmon which is packed with Omega 3 and Grapes which is packed with antioxidants are two great examples of what should be part of a healthy diet. Not to mention water, drink plenty of wanter to keep your skin nicely hydrated.

5. Exercise

Exercising regularly is always well advised because of it’s vast array of health benefits. When it comes to the skin, it’s no different. Raising your heart rate and working up a good sweat helps improve blood-flow and flush out toxins.
